Burnham Market Duck Race a Big Success

The Burnham Market Traders Association organised a successful fund raising Duck Race on May Bank Holiday Sunday (2013) – luckily the Goose Bec was still flowing although a few sand bags were employed to help along the course. 250 bright yellow plastic ducks bobbed and wove their way along to the finishing line, the winner of each heat earning a place in the grand final.

The great weather on the day added to the atmosphere as crowds gathered to support their ducks!

Key to the success of the event was Laura Pocock, of The Artmonger gallery, who seemed to have all angles covered with a well organised starting paddock area, and Jez Scoles who paddled the length of the course making sure no duck was left behind, plus a team of willing helpers ready to guide the ducks through the shallows.

Amazing pork sandwiches were available from the Arthur Howell’s Hog Roast and many spectators chose to picnic on the green before cheering on their duck.

Colourful face painting added an extra duck themed angle to the day.

The winning duck owners were brothers Archie and Wilf Barker, aged 7 & 6, from South Creake – excited to win and take home the prize of a stunning marzipan duck crafted by the Head Chef from The Hoste.

Overall a great family afternoon out with over £600 being raised towards the Burnham Market Christmas Lights Fund.

Thanks to Laura, Jez and all the volunteers for a fantastic job and a great start to this year’s Christmas Lights fund raising effort for Burnham Market!
